I have been in the fitness industry since 2000. I was an athlete in high school, and that active lifestyle kept me in great shape. Then I went off to college in 1994. No more sports. No more exercise. No proper diet. It didn’t take long before I found myself 30+ pounds heavier and feeling terrible about myself. My low self- esteem kept me in an unhealthy relationship. I spent my weekends partying. I was NOT in control of my life at all. Through it all I managed to graduate from Purdue with a degree in Industrial Management and began my career at Caterpillar as a training supervisor. Although on the surface I was doing pretty well, I was simply surviving, not thriving. I met my husband in January 2000. By then, I had lost about 15 pounds by practically starving myself. I was thinner, but I did not feel healthy.
The turning point for me came one day when my soon-to-be husband asked me to go for his normal 4 mile jog with him. In my mind, I was still an athlete who could do anything, so I went. I maybe made it ¼ mile……..
I was MAD….SAD…DETERMINED!!
After crying all the way home and throwing a month-long pity party for myself, I decided to join the local YMCA. I huffed and puffed through multiple workouts. I found myself gravitating toward the group exercise classes. They were fun and I didn’t notice my exhaustion quite so much. Not long after that, I became an instructor. I instantly LOVED it, and felt like leading people in exercise was my calling in life. In 2002, I expanded upon that and became an ACE-certified Personal Trainer. In August of that same year we were blessed with our first child. In 2004, we moved from South Carolina to Indiana to be closer to family. I am an instructor at a local gym(Parkwest Fitness). I have certifications in Turbokick, CoreCamp, IndoRow, Mat Pilates, and TRX. Our 2nd child came in 2006 and our 3rd in 2008. I am wonderfully busy.
I LOVE teaching group exercise, and plan to continue that as long as possible. However, my heart has always wanted to help those people out there who are not yet ready to join a gym, let alone a group class. Getting started is tough! So tough that some people never manage to get it done. I wanted to help them so badly. However, I knew I’d never get to them from inside the walls of a health club. So..when my youngest son went off to kindergarten in 2013, I knew it was time for me to start my own business to help those people. I became an ACE-certified Health Coach and created 2nd Wind Health and Fitness. I have a studio at my home and 15 years of experience to work with. My CHAMPs are my proof that this works. I am humbled each and every day by their will and determination to live a happier, healthier life. Many have gone on to join a gym, and attend my group classes. Their bodies change when their confidence changes. I am incredibly blessed to be a part of their lives.
As for that mad girl who couldn’t run 1/4 mile back in 2000….I am now an avid runner who has competed in multiple races, including 6 half-marathons, a sprint triathlon, and a Tough Mudder. I also coach middle school cross country! I am no longer that weak insecure girl, but I will never forget how it feels.
